Alejandro Mayorkas was born on November 24, 1959, in Havana, Cuba. He was raised by a father of Cuban Jewish background and mother of Romanian Jew background. In late 1960, he, with his parents and his sister, moved to the U.S. as political refugees, following Fidel Castro’s communist takeover. He spent his youth in Miami, Florida and later moved to Los Angeles, California. Alejandro Mayorkas attended the University of California at Berkeley and received a Bachelor of Arts degree with distinction in 1981. In 1985, he joined Loyola Law School in Los Angeles and earned a Juris Doctorate.

Assistant United States Attorney
Before having a permanent position in any working sector, Alejandro Mayorkas was a litigation associate in the private practice of law. In 1989, he was offered the post of Assistant United States Attorney in the Central District of California. During that period, he was also the coordinator of the Southern California Telemarketing Fraud Task Force. Mayorkas served as Chief of the Office’s General Crimes Section from 1996 to 1998.
