Avatar 2 was originally scheduled for release in 2014, the long-awaited follow-up looked all set to finally arrive in the year 2021 after a wait of more than a decade that featured several delays. In fact, Avatar 2 is finally going to be released on December 22, 2022, as it has been pushed back from December 2021. The main cast of the original Avatar is on contract. In the sequel, Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington will be in their roles as in Avatar. The cast of Titanic, Kate Winslet, and Sigourney Weaver will also join the franchise.
The latest delay was a result of production being delayed due to the global shutdown. There will be delays not just in the live-action filming in New Zealand, but also the “virtual production work” taking place in Los Angeles.
Director James Cameron explained in a letter to fans that the ongoing coronavirus pandemic is preventing them from completing the film. In April 2016, Cameron said that the sequels were filmed simultaneously. And, they are going to be released in December 2018, 2020, 2022, and 2023. In 2017, the films began production and once again shifted the dates. Those dates changed to December 2021, 2023, 2025, and 2027 after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox.
