 Gavin Christopher Newsom was born in a well-renowned family to Tessa Thomas and William Alfred Newsom III in San Francisco, California, U.S.  His father, William served as an American state appeals court justice and an attorney. When Gavin was just five years old his parents got divorced. His mother worked hard to support Gavin and his sister.  His sister, Hilary Newsom Callan is the president of the Plump Jack Group. Gavin Newsom also worked several jobs during high school to support his family.

Gavin Newsom attended a French American bilingual school at Ecole Notre Dame in San Francisco. But he transferred due to severe dyslexia. His dyslexia still affects him. This has made him difficult to read, write, spell, and work with numbers. He depended upon a combination of audiobooks, informal verbal instruction throughout his school days. He still prefers to interpret reports through audio.

Gavin then attended through third, fifth grades at Notre Dame des Victoires. Newsom played basketball and baseball during high school times. In 1985, he graduated from Redwood High School. He was an outfielder in baseball. Also, a shooting guard in basketball. These skills placed him to cover the Marin Independent Journal.

Then, Gavin attended Santa Clara University on a partial baseball scholarship. In 1989, he graduated with a B.S. in political science. While in school, he spent a semester studying in Rome.

Gavin Newsom first began his professional career as a businessman. On May 14, 1991, Gavin along with his investors created a company named PlumpJack Associates L.P. His business grew to a multi-million enterprise with more than 700 employees. Gavin Newsom along with his investors spread their business all over the United States. They opened  PlumpJack squaw Valley Inn with a PlumpJack Cafe in 1994, the Balboa Cafe Bar and Grill in 1995, the Balboa Cafe Bar and Grill in 1995, a PlumpJack winery in Napa valley in 1995, the PlumpJack Development Fund L.P. in 1996, the matrix Fillmore Bar in 1998, PlumpJack wines shop Noe Valley branch in 1999, second Balboa Cafe at Squaw Valley in 2000 and a PlumpJack Sport retail clothing in 2000. Gavin Newsom’s investment included two retail clothing stores and five restaurants. When he became mayor in 2004, he sold his share of his San Francisco business. But he maintained his ownership in the PumpJack companies out of San Francisco.

Gavin Newsom began his political career after he was appointed to San Francisco’s Parking and Traffic Commission in 1996. Then, he served on the San Francisco board of supervisors. He was also elected as the president of the Parking and Traffic Commission.

Gavin Newsom won the general election on November 4, 2003, for mayor of San Francisco. He was sworn in as mayor on January 3, 2004. He became the 42nd mayor of San Francisco and the youngest mayor of the city. When he allowed same-sex marriages in 2004, he gained national attention. In 2007, Gavin Newsom was re-elected with 72 percent of the vote. He signed the law establishing Healthy San Francisco in order to provide residents of San Francisco with universal health care services, in 2007.

In April 2009, Newsom announced he would run for Governor of California in the 2010 election. But he suffered low poll numbers throughout the campaign. He was dropped out of the gubernatorial race in October 2009.

Gavin Newsom initially filed paperwork to run for lieutenant governor in February 2010. He declared his candidacy in March 2010. And he received the Democratic nomination in June. Gavin Newsom was elected as the 49th Lieutenant Governor of California in November 2010. He was reelected on November 4, 2014, defeating Republican Ron Nehring with 57.2 percent of the vote. On January 5, 2015, his second term began.

Gavin Newsom announced his candidacy for Governor in the 2018 elections, on February 11, 2015. Eventually, he was elected as the Governor of California on November 6, 2018. He was sworn as governor on January 7, 2019. He focused on increasing access to health care systems to the citizens of California and reducing the cost of healthcare in 2019.

In December 2001, Gavin Newsom married Kimberly Guilfoyle who was an American lawyer, a former San Francisco prosecutor, and later became a prominent personality on Fox News Channel. They married at Saint Ignatius Catholic Church on the campus of the University of San Francisco. Kimberly Guilfoyle Newsom was First Lady of San Francisco during Gavin’s first two-year term as mayor of that city. In January 2005, the couples jointly filed for divorce citing a bi-coastal marriage. Their divorce was legally finalized on February 28, 2006.

In 2007, it was revealed that Newsom had a romantic relationship with Ruby Ripley Tourk in mid-2005. Ruby was the wife of his then-campaign manager and the former deputy staff officer, Alex Tourk. After the revelation, Tourk filed for divorce. He also left Newsom’s campaign and administration.

Gavin Newsom began dating Jennifer Sibel in September 2006. Jennifer  Siebel is an American filmmaker, director, producer, and actress. After a  year of dating, they engaged in December 2007. The couples got married in Stevensville, Montana in July 2008. 

 Gavin and Jennifer have four children together, two sons and two daughters. The first child named Montana Tessa Newsom was born in September 2009 and the second child, Hunter Siebel Newsom in 2011. They welcomed a second daughter, Brooklynn in 2013, and a second son, Dutch was born in 2016.

After the birth of the second child, in 2012, Gavin along with his wife and children moved out of the city, San Francisco. They bought a house in Kentfield in Marin County. Newsom and his family moved to Governor’s Mansion after he won the election as governor and after that settled in Fair Oaks, California.
