Andrew Scott Zimmern was born on July 4, 1961 in New York City. He grew up in a Jewish family and began formal culinary training at the age of 14. He graduated from Vassar College and has contributed to some of the best restaurants in New York, whether as executive chef or general manager.

After moving to Minnesota for drug and alcohol addiction treatment, Zimmer became a hugely successful chef at Cafe Un Deux Trois in the Foshay Tower in Minneapolis.
