Deb Haaland began her political career as the state’s vote director in 2012 Barack Obama’s presidential reelection campaign. In 2014, Deb ran for Lieutenant Governor of New Mexico. Haaland was elected as the Chair of the Democratic Party for a two-year term of New Mexico in April 2015. Democrats of New Mexico regained control of the New Mexico House of Representatives during her tenure.
Deb Haaland announced her intention after the expiration of her term to run for New Mexico’s 1st congressional district for the United States House of Representatives in the 2018 elections. She won the Democratic primary election in June 2018, receiving 40.5% of the vote. Haaland won the general election on November 6 receiving 59.1% of the vote. She wore a traditional Pueblo dress during the swearing-in ceremony.
Deb Haaland was named a candidate for Secretary of the Interior in the Biden Administration in November 2020.
