Evan Spiegel Career

At the University, he met Bobby Murphy, a fellow student, who hired Spiegel to design an online social network inspired by Google Circles. However, this venture was a failure.  The young men did not give up and proceeded to develop what would become their first project: Future Freshman, an online software designed to help counselors, parents, and high school students manage college admissions.

The project began well, but it was unable to maintain steady growth and ended soon afterward. Spiegel and Murphy met another student, Reggie Brown, around that time. It would prove to be a productive collaboration between the three. Brown conceived the idea of creating a disappearing image app and Spiegel decided to start a prototype for one of his classes based on this idea as a project. Soon Murphy became involved, too, and the prototype was developed by the three young men.

The concept was first floated under the name “Picaboo.” The classmates of Spiegel felt that the idea of impermanent photographs was not a feasible one. So, they initially made fun of his final project. In September 2011, the application was re-launched under the Snapchat name. Snapchat soon grew into a mobile application for image messaging and multimedia. So, the team focused on usability and technical aspects.

25 pictures were sent per second on Snapchat in May 2012. By November, users had shared over one billion photos on the Snapchat iOS app, sharing 20 million photos per day. Around this time, Brown left the organization. More than most tech CEOs, Spiegel cares about fashion. In October 2015, he made headlines for appearing on the cover of Vogue Italy.

Newer elements have been added, such as the feature “My Story” and the ability to communicate via video chat, making the app extremely popular worldwide. Over the years, the company has grown at a phenomenal rate and Snapchat reached 10 billion daily video views in 2016. By April 2016, in 28 different countries, it was the top app to download.

Earnings and company revenues

In the year 2012, Spiegel dropped out of Stanford just a few credits short of graduation to work full-time on Snapchat. He nevertheless walked across the stage to collect a diploma with his friends in June, even though he did not earn it. Snapchat moved into an office on the Venice boardwalk the same year as Evan Spiegel dropped out of Stanford. Snapchat occupied thousands of square feet of space at its peak, including an office on Market Street, which once served as its headquarters, steps from the beach. Then Snap moved to Santa Monica in 2019.

Snapchat had close to 60 million downloads by mid-2013 and was valued at $800 million. It wasn’t long before would-be acquirers came to buy Snapchat by knocking on Spiegel’s door. He famously rebuffed Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s $3 billion offer in 2013 and then turned down Google’s subsequent $4 billion offer. He reportedly asked for an armed security detail once (but didn’t get it). In 2016, $890,399 of Snapchat’s money was spent on Spiegel’s security. At a valuation of around $33 billion, Snap went public on March 2, 2017. Snap closed its first trading day at $24.48 per share, up 44 percent from its IPO price, and Spiegel was then rewarded with an additional 37 million shares, pushing its net worth to about $5.5 billion.

Spiegel became an instant billionaire: On the first day of trading, he added about $1.6 billion to his net worth. Snapchat rebounded in 2019 to recover its catastrophic losses, although 2018 proved difficult for Spiegel, and its share price has since risen above its IPO debut.  In Los Angeles’ wealthy Brentwood neighborhood, he bought his own three-bedroom house for $3.3 million, less than four miles from his dad’s place. And, he is Forbes youngest billionaires 2020
