Gary Herbert worked in the US Army under the Utah Army National Guard Unit before entering US politics. He got the staff sergeant’s position and left. Herbert founded his own company, Herbert and Associates Realtors, which mainly dealt with real estate development, after leaving his military career.
Herbert worked as a commissioner on the Utah County Commission from 1990 to 2004. Herbert also worked as the president of the Utah Association of Counties during his work as a commissioner on the Utah Country Commission. He also was the president of the Utah Association of Realtors. In November 2003, Herbert started campaigning for the Governor of Utah’s Republican nomination.
During his period being lieutenant governor, Herbert also worked as chairman of numerous commissions statewide which includes the Commission on Civic, the Administrative Council on Emergency Management, the Commission on Volunteers, and Character Education.
Herbert became Utah’s Governor on 11th August 2009.
Herbert served as the vice-president of the National Governors Association from 2014-2015. As well, he worked as the association’s chair for the year 2015-2016. Herbert won re-election for a second full term, defeating entrepreneur Mike Weinholtz, the Democratic nominee. Also, Herbert had a cameo in the low budget movie Sharknado.

In honor of the National Fallen Fighters Memorial Weekend, Gov. Herbert is lowering flags
Gary R. Herbert, Governor of Utah has ordered the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah on Sunday in honor of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, in coordination with President Donald Trump’s proclamation. The half-staff flags are also to raise awareness of Fire Prevention, scheduled for 4 to 10 October 2020.
Flags will be flown at half-staff at all state installations and public grounds on Sunday only from sunrise to sunset. Individuals and companies are encouraged to fly the flag for the same length of time at half-staff, a press release said.
