Goerge Evrin Perdue III also known as “Sonny” is the 31st United State Secretary of Agriculture since 2017. Besides being a politician, Sonny is also an American businessman and a veterinarian. From 2003 to 2011, Perdue served as the 81st Governor of Georgia. His governance in Georgia was the primary from Republican since Reconstruction. He also served on the Governors’ Council of the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington, D.C. From the Deep South, he is the second secretary of agriculture. Sonny is an organizer and investor in an agriculture trading company.
Sonny Perdue Early life and Education
Sonny Perdue was born on December 20, 1946, in Perry, Georgia. His father George Ervin Perdue was a farmer and mother Ophie Viola (Holt) was a teacher. He was raised in Bonaire and still lives there. Goerge Evrin Perdue III changed his name to ‘sonny’ in his childhood.
He completed his high school from Warner Robins High School where he was a quarterback. Then he completed his doctorate from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine in 1971. Sonny has a doctorate degree in Veterinary Medicine. Before starting his own business, he worked as a veterinary doctor.
Sonny Perdue Political Career
Georgia State Senate(1991-2002)
At the initial of Sonny Perdue’s career, he was a supporter of the Democratic Party. He won the election in 1990 against Republican candidate Ned Sanders as a democratic for the position of Georgia State Senate. Sonny worked in the office from January 9, 1991, to January 9, 2002. Later in 1998, he changed his support from the Democratic to the Republican. In 2000, he won the reelection and served the same post as the Republican.
Governor of Georgia(2003-2011)
Sonny Perdue resigned his State Senate position in December 2001. He was looking at the bigger picture and working on himself to run as the governor of Georgia for the next election. IN 2002 he defeated the Democratic candidate Roy Barnes by 52 per cent of the vote in the election. In the 1870s at the end of reconstruction, Benjamin Conley was the governor of Georgia from the Republican. But since none was elected as Governor of Georgia from the Republican until the win in 2002 by Perdue.
In 2006, Perdue was again elected for the same post defeating Lieutenant Governor Mark Taylor and Libertarian candidate Garrett Michael Hayes.
Each year Perdue has been selected for the honour by the local state for his performance in governance. In 2010, the Governing magazine named Perdue as one of eight Public Officials of the Year.
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture(2017-present)
President Donald Trump selected Sonny Perdue to serve as the Cabinet as secretary of Agriculture on January 18, 2017. The United States Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry confirmed Perdue nomination as Senate on March 30, 2017. Perdue was confirmed by the U.S. Senate by a vote of 87-11 on April 24, 2017. On April 25, 2017, he started his tenure as the US secretary of Agriculture.

Sonny Perdue is happily married to his wife Mary. They tied their knot in 1972 after dating for four years. Together they have four children. Their names are Leigh, Lara, Jim, and Dan. From his children’s side, he has fourteen grandchildren. His grandchildren include six boys and eight girls. Sonny and Mary are also the foster parents of many children. Sonny is also the first cousin of U.S. Senator David Perdue. He is really interested in sports and has also made a cameo as a coach of a football team in the film We Are Marshall.
