Jared Bernstein Education 

Bernstein earned a Bachelor’s degree in music from the Manhattan School of Music. Both him and Orin O’Brien studied double bass. From Hunter college, he also earned a Master of Social Work. Jared also earned a Master of Philosophy degree from Columbia University. Jared obtained a Ph.D. in social welfare.

Bernstein has taught at Howard University, the University of Columbia, and the University of New York. He started working at the Washington D.C. Economic Policy Institute (EPI), a labor-funded think tank in 1992. It advocates for workers with low and middle incomes. 

He served as the Deputy Chief Economist of the USA from 1995 to 1996. Labor Department. He then returned to EPI and worked as a senior economist and director of the Living Standards Program for many years. 

The focus of his expertise and research is on income equality and mobility, earnings and employment trends, poverty and low-wage labor markets, international comparisons, and federal and state economic analysis.

He is also a well-known critic of agreements on free trade. Then, he returned to epidemiology until he was selected by Biden and then he worked as the senior economist and director of the living standards program. He was appointed to the position on the Vice Presidential staff which was created because of the serious nature of the financial challenges facing America. He is a contributor to the financial news network, Consumer News and Business Channel. 

Heterodoxy with dialogue 

In 2018, Bernstein opened a public dialogue with the proponents of Modern Monetary Theory’s heterodox economics branch, to which Bill Mitchell, a supporter of MMT, was the first to engage.
