Before his Governor Position, Kasich served in the Ohio State Senate from 1979 to 1983 and in the United States House of Representatives from 1983 to 2000. He unsuccessfully ran for president in 2000.

In 1978, Kasich ran against Democratic incumbent Robert O’Shaughnessy for the Senate. At age 26, Kasich won with 56% of the vote and began his four-year term as a representative from District 15. Kasich was also one of the second-youngest people ever elected to the Ohio Senate.
One of his first acts as a senator was to reject a raise. Republicans gained control of the Senate in 1980. He began a four-year term in 1979. In 1982, he got victory over Democrat to win a seat in the US House of Representatives.
During his absence from public office, Kasich worked in the Columbus, Ohio office of the investment firm Lehman Brothers. His tenure lasted from 2001 to 2008 when the company collapsed amid a global financial crisis.
Meanwhile, he remained well known to the public as the host of Heartland with John Kasich (2001-07), a political commentary show on Fox News Channel. Unusually for a network product, Heartland originated from Columbus.
In 2010, Kasich was elected Governor of Ohio, again defeating a reigning Democrat. After taking office the following year, he quickly made a name for himself when he signed a law restricting the collective bargaining rights of government employees.

Against Republican voters, who largely rejected the traditional party system, Kasich only won the primary in his home state. However, he outstripped all of Trump’s other Republican competitors before breaking his campaign on May 4, 2016.
