In 2008, she ran for a judgeship on the Fulton Superior Court but became unsuccessful. In 2009, Keisha was elected to the Atlanta City Council where she represented District 11 in southwest Atlanta. She was re-elected for a second term in 2013. Keisha Lance also became the executive director of the Atlanta Fulton Country Recreation Authority starting in 2015.

Keisha Lance Bottoms ran for Mayor of Atlanta in 2017. She won the runoff election and became the 60th Mayor of Atlanta. She signed an executive order forbidding the city jail to hold ICE detainees in 2018.

Keisha Lance Bottoms declared her support for Joe Biden in the 2020 Democratic primary election for the presidential race. She was also given the name of permanent co-chair of the 2020 Democratic National Convention.

After the announcement of the reopening of business in Georgia during the coronavirus pandemic by Brian Kemp, Georgia Governor; she disagreed with his decisions in April 2020. Bottoms issued an executive order in July 2020, reopening measures from Phase 2 to Phase 1 and making it compulsory to wear face covers. Brian kemp declared an order suspending all local mask mandates in his city. On July 16, he filed a case against Keisha in Supreme Court to invalidate her order and prevent her from talking about it.

Keisha Lance married Derek W. Bottoms at Atlanta’s Ben Hill United Methodist Church, in October 1994. Derek Bottoms serves as the vice president of employment practices and associate relations for The Home Depot. They first met at Georgia State University College of Law. They married after dating for three years.

Keisha and Derek had unsuccessful attempts to conceive biologically. And later they adopted four children, Lincoln, Langston, Lennox, and Lance.
