Kimbal Musk Career
In 1995, with College Pro Painters, Kimbal Musk made his first foray into the world of entrepreneurship and investment through a residential painting company. It was in the same year that he and Elon set up their second company together, Zip2, which acted as an online guide. It provided the New York Times and Chicago Tribune newspapers with electronic versions. In 1999, in a $307 million contract, Compaq acquired the company from them in a $307 million.
Musk then became a major investor in the fields of software and technology. He invested in an online bank and financial service provider, X.com, one of Elon’s early projects. A business called Confinity merged with X.com in March 2000 and X.com soon agreed to end all other internet banking operations except PayPal money service. In 2001, the company itself was renamed PayPal. A year later, X.com was purchased by the multi-national e-commerce firm eBay for $1.5 billion in stock. Most entrepreneurs would have retired after such success with PayPal, choosing to spend the rest of their lives in ease and comfort. But a new passion was discovered by Musk. Kimbal Musk went to New York to study culinary arts at the prestigious French Culinary Institute, while Elon remained in California and began building his empire in the energy field.
Following his graduation, in February 2002, Musk and his then-wife, Jen Lewin, embarked on a road trip across the USA to look for an ideal place to set up their restaurant. Before settling on Boulder for its environment and the food scene, they visited Chicago, Jackson Hole, Denver, Santa Fe, San Diego, Laguna Beach, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle. The Kitchen Boulder, a community bistro, was launched by Musk, Lewin, and Chef Hugo Matheson in April 2004. They first extended to the upper floor of the same building, opening a cocktail lounge called The Upstairs Kitchen. Next Door, a casual American urban eatery located just west of Musk’s original Park Street Mall restaurant, was opened in 2011. The restaurant chain has branches in Glendale, Stapleton, and Denver Union Station.
The Kitchen has become a family of restaurants over the last 13 years, to provide easy real food for the real Americans. Various culinary sources and organizations, including Food & Wine, Zagat’s, Gourmet, Opentable, and the James Beard Foundation, have selected it as one of the country’s best restaurants. Musk became the CEO of OneRiot, Inc., a company offering solutions for email marketing, in November 2006. In September 2011, he quit the company when Walmart Labs, a privately-held website whose main office is in Mountain View, California, acquired OneRiot. He founded Square Roots Urban Growers a food production company in 2017. The company aims to develop campuses for indoor, hydroponic, climate-controlled vertical farms that can be maintained in a city environment.
