Michelle Lynn Lujan Grisham commonly called Michelle is an American lawyer and a politician from Democratic Party. She currently serves as the 32nd governor of New Mexico since 2019. Previously from 2013 to 2019, she was the U.S. Representative for New Mexico’s 1st congressional district. In the U.S. governor history, she was the first Democratic woman and first Democratic Hispanic woman to be elected as governor of New Mexico, on November 6, 2018. From 2004 to 2007, she served as the Secretary of Health of New Mexico and as Bernalillo County Commissioner from 2010 to 2012. In 2012, she was elected for the U.S. House of Representatives and promoted to the Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus in 2016. Currently, she is one of the experts for the Biden-Harris presidential transition team.

Michelle Lujan Grisham Early Life and Education
Michelle Lujan Grisham was born on October 24, 1959, in Los Alamos, New Mexico. She was raised by her father, Llewellyn Lujan, a practised doctor and mother Sonja, a homemaker in Santa Fe. She lost her father in March 2011. Lujan also had a sister, but she passed at the age of 2 due to a brain tumour. Her ancestors are the native of New Mexico, and she is part of the famous Lujan political family. Lujan attended her high school from St. Michael’s High School. She completed her bachelor’s degree from the University of New Mexico (UNM) in 1981. Lujan also earned a Juris Doctor from the University of New Mexico School of Law in 1987.
Michelle Lujan Grisham Career
At the very phase of her career Lujan was the Director of the New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department. She was elected under Governors Bruce King, Gary Johnson and Bill Richardson. Later in 2004, she was elected as New Mexico Secretary of Health. In 2010, she moved on to work for the Bernalillo County Commission until 2012.
U.S. House of Representatives
Initially, in 2008, she resigned her post as Secretary of Health to run for the United States House of Representatives. But in 2008 she was merely defeated in Democratic primary by candidate Martin Heinrich. In 2012, she again tried and this time defeated Marty Chavez and Eric Griego in the primary. In the general elections, she defeated Janice Arnold-Jones, a former member of the New Mexico House of Representatives. Lujan again won the election in 2014 and 2016. In 2016, she was selected as the Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. She left the position in 2018.
Governor of Mexico
Lujan Grisham was the first person to announce her candidacy for the governor. On June 5, 2018, she won the party’s nomination and on November 6, she defeated Republican U.S. Representative Steve Pearce. Her victory made her the first Democratic woman and first Democratic Hispanic woman to be elected as governor of New Mexico. In November 2020 she was nominated for the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services in the Biden Administration.
