President Donald Trump approved the request of Gov. Doug Burgum for a presidential declaration of a major disaster for the effects of a severe summer storm. In several counties, this disaster has caused flash flooding by which there is damage to the road and other infrastructure of more than $5 million. Six counties such as Benson, Grand Forks, McKenzie, Mountrail, Nelson, and Wells are covered by this declaration. In some areas, the storm destroyed infrastructure and homes with high winds, hail, and 4 to 8 inches of rain from 29th June to 1st July. During the last two years, disasters have caused catastrophic flooding which has pummeled many of the counties.

The presidential declaration unlocks public assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help counties, cities, and townships. This will pay for repair costs of roads and other infrastructure. According to the Preliminary evaluations, damage to local infrastructure systems exceeded $2.25 million and nearly $2.9 million in damage to the state’s Federal Aid System highways.
