Pete Buttigieg was the only child of Joseph Buttigieg and Jennifer Anne. His father Joseph was born in Malta and served as a professor at the University of Notre Dame. His mother Jennifer was born in California. Both of his parents were university graduates. His parents got married while studying at New Mexico State University.

Pete Buttigieg began his career as an editor of the Oxford International Review during his college days. He served as a co-founder and member of the Democratic Renaissance Project. He was also an investigative intern at NBC News affiliate of Chicago, WMAQ-TV. He also interned for Democrat Jill Long Thompson in 2002 congressional bid.
After graduating, Pete Buttigieg worked on the 2004 presidential campaign for John Kerry being a policymaker and research specialist. At the same time, Barack Obama also invited him for his senate campaign but he declined his offer instead worked for John Kerry. In 2007, Pete Buttigieg worked at the Chicago office, Mckinsey & Company as a consultant for three years.
Pete Buttigieg joined the US Navy Reserve in 2009 where he was sworn as a naval intelligence. In 2014, he took a seven-month leave in order to deploy to Afghanistan. In 2017, he resigned from the U.S. Navy Reserve.
Pete Buttigieg ran for treasurer of Indiana in 2010. But he lost the general election to Richard Mourdock, a Republican candidate receiving 37.5% of the vote.
Pete Buttigieg won the mayoral election of South Bend receiving 74% of the vote. He was sworn-in into office in January 2012 at the age of 29. He became the second-youngest mayor of South Bend and the youngest mayor of the U.S. city. Buttigieg announced that he would run for a second term in 2014. In November 2015, he won for the second term as mayor receiving 80% of the vote.
Pete Buttigieg was a candidate for Democratic National Committee’s election for the chair in 2017. But he withdrew his candidacy before the election was held.
Pete Buttigieg was a Democratic nominee for the 2020 presidential primary election. But he lost the democratic New Hampshire primary election to Bernie Sanders on February 11, 2020. He announced that he was suspending his presidential campaign on March 1, 2020. But on March 2, he endorsed Joe Biden for president. On 5th September 2020, Pete Buttigieg joined a 15-person advisory board for Biden’s presidential campaign.
