Who Is Donna Hylton?

Donna Hylton is a popular author and a criminal justice reform advocate. Donna is a Jamaican – American ethnicity who works for women’s rights. She is vocal about her thoughts about the issues faced by imprisoned girls and women and their effect on families and societies.

Although, she has been convicted of murder in the second degree and two counts of kidnapping in the first degree. Donna was imprisoned for her role in murdering Thomas Vigliarolo, a New York businessman in 1985. Hylton was punished for 25 years of life in custody and was set free in 2012. She served there for more than twenty-six years.

Donna Hylton Early Life and Family

Donna lived with her mother in Port Antonia, Jamaica, during her early childhood. Her mother was a devotee of the religious practice of the West Indies. In 1972, at the age of 7, her mother sold her to a childless couple, Roy and Daphne Hylton for money. They took her with them to New York City.

When she was nine, Roy Hylton began to abuse her sexually regularly. She faced lots of problems and was helpless at a young age. In 1979, at the age of 14, she began to study at St Andrews, a renowned private school. Donna was again raped there by her mathematics tutor. 

After those sufferings, she escaped to Philadelphia with a friend. Dalton again was raped by that friend in a motel room.

Donna Hylton faced mental and physical torture with that friend. In 1980, Donna returned to New York. She found she was pregnant at the age of 15. In February 1981, Donna gave birth to a daughter, Adriene at the age of 16. Donna claims that her daughter has to face several waves of abuse at her teenage.

In 1982, Donna Hylton got married to a nineteen years old boy, George Belton, who was a rapper. She married at her young age of 18. When she discovered that she was pregnant again, her husband and mother-in-law forced her to terminate the pregnancy. After an abortion, Donna was asked for a divorce by her husband.

Donna Hylton’s Journey to Prison

In 1984, Donna Hylton began working at a hotel gift shop. In 1985, she met a man named Lous Miranda. In March 1985, Lous Miranda persuaded her in blackmailing to recover money from a business partner. On March 20, 1985, along with three female co-workers, Donna Hylton followed the order of Miranda. Then they drugged and kidnapped Thomas Vigliarolo. Vigliarolo was abused for 15 to 20 days. On April 5, 1985, Vigliarolo died of asphyxiation. After three days, the dead body was found locked in a boot in a Manhattan apartment. Soon, Hylton was taken in Custody after someone captured the license plate number of the vehicle she was driving.

In February 1986, Hylton was brought to court and she apologized that she had participated due to the threat given by Louis Miranda. On March 12, 1986, the jury sentenced her to prison for 25 years on behalf of second-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping. Later she ended up staying in prison for more than twenty-five years.

Donna Hylton’s Education

While in prison, Donna Hylton gained a Bachelor’s degree in behavioral sciences faculty from Mercy College in 1994. She also achieved a Master’s degree in women’s studies and English literature from Marymount Manhattan College in 2003.

On January 17, 2012, Hylton was released from prison after serving for around twenty-six years.

After release from prison, Donna spent her time working for women’s rights and criminal justice reform advocates. She has also appeared in other public events.

In 2017, Donna participated in the Women’s March in Washington as a counselor for imprisoned women and their rights.

In September 2018, Donna Hylton spoke at the Global Citizen Week in New York.

On August 20, 2020, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) included Donna Hylton in a list of 22 of “America’s most impactful community leaders”. She was asked to participate in the DNC video reading of the Preamble to the Constitution during a television portion of the convention.
