Xavier Becerra initially began his career as a lawyer. He worked for the Legal Assistance Corporation of Central Massachusetts, on the cases of individuals who were suffering from mental disorders.
Xavier Becerra began his political career as an Administrative Assistant for California State Senator Art Torres in 1986. From 1987 to 1990, he served in the California Department of Justice as a Deputy Attorney General. Becerra also served one term in the State Assembly from 1990 to 1992, representing California’s 59th district.
Xavier Becerra ran for the U.S. House of Representatives and won the Democratic primary election receiving 32% of the vote. He also won the general election receiving 58% of the vote. He won the re-election for a second term in 1994 with 66% of the vote.
Xavier Becerra voted against the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act on September 29, 2008. He was also appointed assistant to the speaker of the House for the 110th Congress. He also won for the Vice-Chair of the 111th Congress. He also ran for the second-term as Vice-Chair in 2011 during the 112th congress.
Xavier Becerra was appointed to serve on the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform on March 24, 2010. He was selected to serve on the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction on August 11, 2011. He was also appointed to serve on a bicameral conference committee on December 23, 2011, to determine solutions on unemployment insurance, middle-class tax cuts, and the Medicare physician payment rate.
In 2001, Xavier Becerra ran for Los Angeles Mayor. But he lost the primary election with a 6% vote. He also endorsed U.S. Senator Barack Obama for President on January 27, 2008.
Xavier Becerra accepted the offer of Governor Jerry Brown on December 1, 2016, to make him the Attorney General of California. He was confirmed to the post on January 23, 2017. He was sworn in as the Attorney General of California on January 24, 2017. He became the first Latino to serve as Attorney General.
